Batsto Take II
We had another go at the 20-mile loop at Batsto today. Plenty of minor falls, log-jumping, one flat tire, several eaten bugs, and a collective sense of excitement as the summer unfolds. Wait, crap, we forgot to get water ice on the way home..

en route to white clay for some MTB action

Perfect day for mountain biking today at White Clay Creek in Delaware. Only an hour away from Philly and tons of trails to ride -- not too technical or hilly either. Josh F. had an unfortunate encounter with a log but he's fine. We ran into some nice gentlemen who showed us the way out of one loop we were stuck in, and also saw our buddy Fernando on the way out. Before returning to Philly we stopped at Capriotti's for some pretty amazing hoagies -- highly recommend!

Opportunity to Donate
Dear Friends and Family,
As some of you may already know, some cycling enthusiast friends of mine and I have started a racing team. We are based out of the Firehouse Bicycles shop in West Philly and already have dozens of races under our belts from the previous two years. We formed this team mainly to increase our motivation, skill, performance, efficiency, and camaraderie, but we have also launched an exciting partnership with a local non-profit organization, Neighborhood Bike Works, to help get young Philadelphia kids and teens interested in cycling.
I am writing to you because, like anything fun, this team requires funding to get off the ground. We already have the sponsorship of several local business who are providing either cash or in-kind donation of products or services, but we have not yet met our goals for 2011. Even if you are only able to contribute $5, each dollar counts. We will accept any dollar amount! For more information regarding our 2011 budget (in other words, where your money is going), please consult this blog entry. To donate, please visit the ChipIn site listed below.
We thank you for your interest in our team. Please check our blog and Facebook page to keep up with our events. We will be having a fundraising party sometime this Spring -- you're all invited!
Respectfully,
Firehouse Bicycles Racing Team
Sam, Giulia, Larry, Joshua, Josh, Clair, and Eian

2010 Summary
The 2010 cyclocross season was a successful one for all of us. For some it was our first season racing. Others were returning for their second or third seasons. The season started for most of us in early September and continued well into December. The team covered much of the east coast, with races as far south as North Carolina, and stretching all the way up to Massachusetts. Collectively, we participated in 40 total races during the season. In addition to regularly racing to respectable results there were three top 10 finishes amongst the team for the year.
2011 Goals
The 2011 calendar year is newly upon us and this finds us on a weekly training schedule for the upcoming cycling season. If we are not out riding in the cold mid-atlantic weather, we can be found sweating indoors on our trainers. Our team’s main focus is the cyclocross season in the fall, but a few of us will be found at occasional road or mountain bike races. We are all extremely excited to be riding together and consistently improving and getting stronger as cyclists and as individuals.
In addition to our personal and team cycling goals for the 2011 season, we are also pleased to announce a collaboration with Neighborhood Bike Works, a nonprofit educational organization also based in West Philadelphia. NBW’s mission is to increase opportunities for urban youth through bicycling, and our team aims to help with this by opening them up to the world of cyclocross. Cyclocross is a type of bicycle racing that combines many different elements, such as pavement, grass, mud, dirt, gravel, wooded trails, and barriers. It is attractive to mountain bike and road racers alike, and the youth of NBW have demonstrated a growing interest in cyclocross through their involvement in races in 2010. Through our liaison with NBW, we hope to strengthen this interest by offering these youth a cyclocross skills clinic in late August, regular weekly practices in Fairmount Park, and transportation to and from races throughout the fall 2011 cyclocross season.
